Infrared Sauna FAQs
Here are some questions commonly asked of the staff at SolShine.
What Should I Wear in the Infrared Sauna?
We suggest wearing loose-fitting, light-colored, breathable clothing. This will help to maximize the infrared light’s penetration and promote effective sweating. Cotton, bamboo, and linen are great choices because they will provide good air flow and absorb sweat. Avoid synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester—you will find them to be uncomfortable.
Even better, wear nothing at all. This will allow for maximum skin exposure to the infrared rays—for greater benefits.
If you’re adding red light therapy to your session, the area(s) of the body being treated should be exposed to the red light. Keep that in mind when deciding what you’ll wear (or not wear).
How Long Do Infrared Sauna Sessions Last?
An infrared sauna session can last up to 40 minutes. We suggest starting with a shorter duration until you become accustomed to the experience.
When Can I Expect to See and Feel the Results of My Infrared Sauna Session?
When using an infrared sauna, results vary and are dependent upon individual factors and the specific benefits you’re seeking. Here are some general expectations and potential results:
Immediate Benefits (1-3 sessions): Many users report feeling more relaxed and mentally refreshed after just one infrared sauna session. This is due to the release of endorphins and the calming of the nervous system. Others say they get relief from mild muscle and joint pain, soreness, and stiffness. That’s because the heat promotes improved blood flow.
Short-Term Benefits (1-4 weeks of consistent use): Regular infrared sauna sessions can help to regulate cortisol levels, which promotes relaxation and better sleep. Improvement in skin has also been reported, including a healthier glow and clearer skin (due to sweating that flushes impurities). Water-weight reduction can also be experienced by some users, due to the temporary effects of sweating.
Long-Term Benefits (4-12+ weeks of consistent use): Regular, long-term use of the infrared sauna can enhance circulation, lower blood pressure, and improve heart function over time. You may also notice management of chronic pain from conditions like arthritis, back pain, and fibromyalgia. And let’s not forget about detoxification. Regular sweating can help to eliminate heavy metals and other toxins.
Should Some People Avoid Using an Infrared Sauna?
People with heart problems, high blood pressure that’s not controlled, pregnancy, fever, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, diabetes, implants, hemophilia or other blood-clotting conditions, and those taking medication should always consult with their physician before spending time in an infrared sauna. Children and the elderly should use this therapy with caution. Alcohol should not be consumed before or during your session. Using the sauna while joint injuries are still swollen should be avoided.
What are EMF and ELF, and Why Do They Matter in Saunas?
Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) fields are energies emitted by electrical devices, with EMF being prevalent in daily life through phones, power lines, and more. Prolonged or high exposure to these fields has sparked concerns over their potential impact on health, such as sleep disturbances, cellular stress, and other issues.
Clearlight® Sanctuary Saunas stand out by maintaining ultra-low EMF and ELF levels—measuring almost zero when seated or lying down—making them some of the safest infrared saunas available. Unlike many traditional saunas, particularly those with carbon or ceramic heaters that aren’t optimized for low EMF output, Clearlight® saunas minimize these exposures, promoting a safer and more healing environment. This focus on reducing EMF and ELF exposure is especially beneficial for those using saunas for detox, relaxation, or managing chronic health conditions.
Can I Share My Membership with a Friend?
Unlike sharing a membership, our Sanctuary sauna is spacious enough for two guests, and we offer discounted “bring a friend” options to make it easy to enjoy the experience together.
How Hot Does the Infrared Sauna Get?
Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures than traditional saunas—typically between 115°F and 140°F—but penetrate the body more deeply for an effective sweat and detox. This makes the experience more comfortable and easier to tolerate than traditional saunas.
Is it Safe to Use an Infrared Sauna Every Day?
Yes! Many people safely use infrared saunas daily. However, always listen to your body, stay hydrated, and consult a healthcare provider if you have medical concerns or conditions.
Do I Need to Shower Following My Infrared Sauna Session?
While we don’t have showers on-site, we provide chilled towels—available with or without eucalyptus essential oil—to help you cool down and wipe away sweat and toxins after your session. Showering at home shortly after is still recommended to fully cleanse the skin and close your pores.
